Onno W. Purbo

Ir. Onno W. Purbo, M.Eng., Ph.D., is a figure and expert in the field of information technology. Apart from being an expert, Onno is also known as a writer, educator, and seminar speaker. As an activist, Onno is known for his efforts to fight for Linux. His innovative works include Wajanbolic, as an effort to make cheap wireless internet connections and RT/RW-Net as a non-governmental computer network for spreading cheap internet, and the application of Open BTS.

 

Onno started his academic education at ITB majoring in Electrical Engineering in 1981 and graduated with honors of the best graduate, then in 1989 continued his studies in Canada with a scholarship from PAUME. He has a Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo, Canada, in Integrated Circuit Technology for satellites.

 

He is active in writing in the field of media information technology, seminars, national and international conferences and believes in copyleft (open source) philosophy, many of his writings are published for free on the internet.

 

Many works have been produced by Onno W. Purbo in the form of free writings which are published on the internet, books, international publications, and Linux distributions. He has also received various awards at the national and international levels.

 

In 2020, Onno W. Purbo received the Jonathan B Postel Service Award from the Internet Society (ISOC) for his services in the internet world.
