ITB Mechanical Engineering Alumnus Appointed as UN Youth Advisor, Highlights Green Jobs in Studium Generale

Zagy Berian, a graduate of the Mechanical Engineering Program (MS) class of 2016 at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), is currently serving on the global stage as a Youth Advisor to the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) on Climate Change. On Wednesday, September 10, 2025, Zagy was invited as a speaker at Studium Generale ITB, delivering a lecture titled “Green Jobs as the Future of Careers Towards Golden Indonesia 2045.”

The session was moderated by Dr. Alfita Puspa Handayani, S.T., M.T., who serves as Head of the Sub-directorate of Alumni Networking and Activities, under the ITB Directorate of Alumni Relations and Career Development (DITLUMNIER).

In his presentation, Zagy emphasized the importance of preparing the younger generation to navigate the fundamental shifts occurring in the job market, driven by digital transformation, automation, and the global push for environmental sustainability. He highlighted the growing demand for green skills—competencies that support the transition to a green economy—across various sectors such as renewable energy, sustainable transportation, industry, forestry, and marine and coastal resource management.

Zagy pointed out that Generation Z’s preference for sustainable products and social values is significantly reshaping market expectations and employment landscapes. Therefore, university graduates must be equipped not only with technical expertise but also with sustainability leadership to effectively drive change across sectors.

He outlined ten key areas of expertise required in the green transition era, ranging from calculating emission impacts and identifying decarbonization strategies to analyzing sustainable business models and communicating data-driven solutions effectively.

Zagy’s role at the United Nations serves as a powerful testament to the global impact that ITB alumni can have in addressing pressing world challenges. His presence in such international forums strengthens the contribution of Indonesian youth in the realms of diplomacy and sustainable development on the world stage.
