ITB Alumni receive the Jonathan B Postel Service Award 2020

Maybe not many people know that Indonesia is a country in the world that has successfully implemented a large-scale community network in its country. Almost no country in the world has successfully implemented a large-scale WARNET, RT / RW-net, Wajanbolic, VoIP Rakyat community network in a country. As a result, it is not surprising that Indonesia has often become an example for many of the world’s internet activists in implementing community internet networks. The internet community in the world recognizes Indonesia’s success in using Internet technology, so that it has succeeded in building community networks.

Internet Society (ISOC), which is one of the highest institutions on the internet, gives Postel Service Awards to those who have contributed greatly to the internet as equal to the world’s internet heroes. There are not many Postel Service Award recipients, only 1 person each year. In ASIA, there are only 4 people, namely Jun Murai / Internet Samurai (Japan), Kanchana Kanchanasut (Thailand), Kilnam Chon (Korea), and Mahabir Pun (Nepal).

In 2020, the Jonathan B Postel Service Award from the Internet Society (ISOC) was awarded to Indonesia, Onno W. Purbo (Electrical Engineering ’81). This is the highest award from the world internet to Indonesia not only Onno W. Purbo. It explicitly states that the steps / methods / technology taken by Indonesia to make the Internet cheap, Internet for All are correct.

Postel Service Award, shows that with all the limitations that exist in the Indonesian nation, it actually shows a creative nation, a nation that is able to overcome its limitations and even provides “out-of-the-box” solutions to its problems and is very worthy of be an example that should be respected by the world.

Congratulations on your proud achievement.
