About Muhammad Agung Saputra

Muhammad Agung Saputra and cofounders created Surplus to cut back on food waste in Indonesia. The app allows major food suppliers like hotels, malls and farmers to sell excess food at cheap prices. Since its launch in 2021, the company has attracted major retail and hospitality customers including Marriott International and Jakarta’s Mall Sarinah, and serves several Indonesian metro areas like greater Jakarta, Bandung, and Bali. Last year the startup secured an undisclosed amount of seed funding from Salam Pacific Indonesia Lines.

Agung Saputra completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Science at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and continued his study at Imperial College London by majoring in Environmental Technology under the Centre for Environmental Policy Department.

He comes with more than three years of experience working on environmental consultation projects and environmental policies with a focus on waste management and circular economy.

Agung kickstarted his journey as an ecosociopreneur by founding Surplus in Jakarta, Indonesia in 2020 in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic. Surplus is an app-based marketplace that enables local food businesses, hotels, and farms to sell their overstock and, or imperfect products as it approaches the end of its shelf-life to customers at 50% or more in order to avoid edible or untouched meals from becoming food waste that end up in the landfill.

To date, Surplus has rescued more than 5000 meals equivalent to 1 ton of food across 8 cities and avoided the emissions of roughly 30 tonnes of CO2 in just a year and a half.

Also, during the pandemic COVID-19, we help the business owner to be more resilient & financially recover for their business to survive by selling their overstock/imperfect product during the restriction movement that occurred. The potential financial loss around $5,000.
